Midlands unemployment rate dips sharply
Unemployment in the Columbia metropolitan statistical area, which comprises six counties, shrank to 9.2% in September from 9.7% in August. Lexington County continued to have the lowest rate in the state, down 0.4 percentage point in September to 8.1% from 8.5% in August. Richland County’s rate was down 0.6 percentage point to 9.6% from 10.2% in August.

SMD plans new facility, jobs in Clarendon County
Service Management Distribution has opened a building products distribution facility in Clarendon County. The facility employs eight people, and SMD has plans to grow the operation as its business expands in the region.
