Mayor calls 2011 ‘transformational’ for Columbia
Mayor Steve Benjamin summed up the city’s progress in 2011 by citing the blossoming of Main Street, companies adding hundreds of jobs in regional businesses and the city investing in public safety, transportation, water and sewer.
Study: USC, alumni pump $4.1B into S.C. economy
An economic impact study released today shows the University of South Carolina and its alumni support about 53,000 jobs and annually pump $4.1 billion into the state’s economy. USC’s 14,000 employees and 155,000 alumni in the Palmetto State contribute $75 million more to the state in taxes than USC receives in state appropriations.
S.C. BlueCross foundation grants programs $7.7M
The BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina Foundation approved $6.7 million in grants in the latter half of 2011, bringing its total support for S.C. health initiatives to $7.7 million for the year. Since the foundation was established in 2003, it has allocated more than $37.8 million to address health issues.
Attorney general says 900 dead people voted in S.C.
The review of voting records was launched to analyze data related to the state’s voter ID law, which requires voters to show photo identification at the polls and has been blocked by the U.S. Department of Justice. Attorney General Alan Wilson said hundreds of dead people appear to have voted in recent elections.
Columbia airport falls shy of break-even mark
Just 140 fewer passengers boarded flights at Columbia Metropolitan Airport in 2011. That’s .03% less than 2010’s mark of 492,598 — the smallest decrease in year-to-year comparisons since 2005. Airport officials are projecting passenger traffic will hold steady in 2012.
