First Financial Holdings Inc. of Charleston faced three out-of-state competitors in its acquisition of Plantation Federal Bank, which was closed by federal regulators in April. Plantation Federal operated in the Greenville market as First Savers Bank.

Cheryl Holland will serve on the board of trustees of the women’s liberal arts school. Holland is president and founder of Abacus Planning Group Inc., a financial planning and investment counsel firm for individuals and closely held businesses.
Groth joins First Citizens as senior VP
Steve Groth, of Columbia, will be responsible for promoting the bank’s lending services to organizations in the government and higher education sectors of South Carolina and Georgia. Groth previously worked at RBC Bank and Wachovia.
Le Creuset to expand Hampton County facility
The French cookware manufacturer plans to invest $2 million in a 93,000-square-foot expansion at their North American distribution site, located in Early Branch. This is the fourth time that Le Creuset has announced investment or growth in its current location.
Online S.C. job vacancies up 600 in May
South Carolina has seen the number of online advertised vacancies rise by 3,500 over the past four months, according to data from The Conference Board Help Wanted Online. Nationally, online advertised vacancies dipped 45,700 in May to 4.7 million.
S.C. State University names interim president
Cynthia Warrick currently serves as a senior fellow in the Howard University School of Pharmacy, Center for Minority Health Services Research. She begins her new job in Orangeburg July 1.

Most of the co-defendants were from the Lowcountry, including several who worked for the S.C. Department of Corrections, when the crimes were committed, said U.S. Attorney Bill Nettles. Friends, family and co-workers were recruited to use their personal information to file fake student aid applications and pocket the balance of grants and loans.
