Angel investors bill emerges from   Senate committee

The Senate Finance   Committee advanced the Bill Wylie Entrepreneurship Act with several   amendments to the House version. The bill would provide a 35% tax credit to   qualified angel investors who invest in registered startup businesses.

Growth in area manufacturing jobs   outpaces average

The Brookings Institution   ranked the Columbia metro area in the top 50 nationally for growth of   manufacturing jobs, the number employees per plant and percentage of workers   in “moderately high-tech” positions. From the first quarter of 2010 through   the fourth quarter of 2011, manufacturing jobs in the Columbia area increased   5.9%.

  Columbia airport plans for $7.4M   in construction projects

The largest project will   involve full construction and widening of the taxiway, the airport’s   executive director said. Other airport projects include new signage, repairs   to the UPS ramp and a new fire truck.

SCE&G to retire portion of   coal-fired generation

The units range in age   from 45 to 57 years and are SCE&G’s smallest coal-fired units. SCE&G   said it determined that adding costly environmental control equipment to   these plants to ensure compliance with new regulations would not be a good   business decision.

  Senate panel approves abandoned   buildings bill

This bill would provide   an incentive for the rehabilitation, renovation and redevelopment of   abandoned buildings in the state. Rep. James Smith said he would hope to get   the bill passed in the Senate today, then deal with the difference in details   in conference committee.

Chamber seeks nominations for   manufacturing awards

Nominations should be   submitted no later than June 15 to the S.C. Chamber of Commerce. Winners will   be honored before an audience of fellow business leaders at the Manufacturer   of the Year Awards Luncheon Aug. 29 at the Embassy Suites Hotel in Columbia.

C.F. Evans completes fourth green   project

Williams Place, a   four-building project of Mental Health America of South Carolina, opened May   18. With this project complete, the Orangeburg-based construction management firm   said it has built 385 certified green units and has more than 600 under   construction.
