Clyburn remains committed to nuclear industry
U.S. Rep. Jim Clyburn, D-S.C., said at this morning’s news conference at his Columbia district office that he is committed to the development of new nuclear power plants to supply America with electricity. Clyburn also spoke about redistricting, Libya and the annual budget for the federal government.
Justice Department investigating Blue Cross’ practices
The U.S. Department of Justice claimed in a lawsuit filed in October that Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan was violating antitrust laws in its contracts with hospitals, and now the government is expanding its investigation of the matter. Blue Cross Blue Shield of South Carolina appears to be among the targets.
U.S. Attorney Bill Nettles announced the charges against the five employees, who are accused of falsely claiming unemployment benefits. Each of the defendants faces up to 10 years’ imprisonment.
Manufacturers Alliance elects chairmanThe S.C. Manufacturers Alliance has elected Barry Falin, vice president of Thompson Industrial of Sumter, to serve as chairman of the 2011-2012 board of directors. The alliance membership comprises more than 200 manufacturing companies that represent more than 80,000 employees across the state. Columbia-Richland Fire Dept. receives $396,080 grantThe funds will be used for recruitment efforts to increase the number of volunteer firefighters within the department. The grant was the largest award of seven received in South Carolina. |
