French Performances: Columbia Museum of ArtFriday, February 10, 2012 at 7:00pm and Sunday, February 12, 2012 at 2:00pm The "théâtre de boulevard" flourished in Parisian commercial theatres from the 1890s through the 1920s and featured light comic fare about contemporary bourgeois society. Plots were intricate but inconsequential, adultery and domestic squabbles, those staples of French farce, were rampant. The Club Théâtre of the Alliance Française of Columbia performs two sketches and a one-act play by two of the best-known boulevard playwrights: Georges Courteline's Le commissaire est bon enfant, about an efficient police commissioner whose patience is tried by a string of petitioners, and Les Boulingrin, a cautionary tale about the perils of sponging off your acquaintances, and Georges Feydeau's Hortense a dit: «Je m'en fous!», an afternoon in the life of a long-suffering dentist whose domestic trials push him over the edge. Better than a snootful of nitrous oxide! |
